Factions and Renown
22.07.2026 @ 2200
Renown represents a character’s reputation, influence, and support within a faction. Each faction tracks Renown separately, so earning Renown with one faction does not increase a character’s standing with another.
Renown can be spent to request assistance, equipment, contacts, and other faction rewards.
Gaining Renown
Characters gain Renown by completing objectives that support a faction’s ideals. This might include completing a faction request during an adventure, protecting its members, recovering important resources, resolving a problem connected to its mission, or advancing its long-term goals.
The amount of Renown gained is determined by the GM according to the importance of the character’s actions.
Characters may lose Renown when they act against a faction’s principles, misuse its resources, harm its members, or damage its reputation.
Spending Renown
Activating a Renown reward requires 1 Downtime Day and reduces the character’s current Renown by the listed cost.
A reward may be claimed repeatedly, provided the character has enough Renown to pay for it. The details of the reward should be adjusted to match the faction providing it.
Faction members and resources will not knowingly assist with actions that directly oppose the faction’s principles.
Faction Ranks
Ranks are permanently earned when a character reaches certain Renown thresholds for the first time. Spending Renown does not remove a rank that has already been earned. A character must still remain in good standing with the faction to use their title or claim its benefits.
- Upon reaching 5 Renown for the first time, the character gains Rank 1 within the faction.
- Upon reaching 15 Renown for the first time, the character gains Rank 2 within the faction.
- Upon reaching 30 Renown for the first time, the character gains Rank 3 within the faction.
- Upon reaching 50 Renown for the first time, the character gains Rank 4 within the faction.
Individual factions may give these ranks unique titles, and have special conditions that must also be met for it to be offical, but the Renown thresholds remain the same.
Basic Rewards
The following table outlines the standard rewards available to characters as they gain Renown within a faction. These rewards represent increasing levels of trust, access, and support, and can be adapted to suit the flavour and capabilities of each faction.
| Cost | Reward |
|---|---|
| 3 | Hospitality. You and your companions may stay at an appropriate faction base or approved shelter for up to seven days. It provides food, shelter, basic treatment, and a Poor lifestyle. |
| 5 | Contact. A local faction member provides a minor favour, useful information, an introduction, or assistance with a simple task related to the faction’s work. |
| 10 | Equipment. The faction provides specialised equipment, supplies, or one minor magical item associated with its work. |
| 15 | Support. The faction performs one significant service, such as providing transport, specialist treatment, expert advice, safe passage, forged documents, research, or another service appropriate to the faction. |
| 25 | Specialist. One suitable faction specialist assists you for up to five days. The specialist will face serious danger in support of the faction’s mission but will not knowingly violate its principles. |
| 30 | Hideout. The faction establishes a temporary camp, office, sanctuary, safe house, research post, or similar base within the current region. It remains available for the duration of the adventure and provides services appropriate to the faction. |
| 40 | Relic. The faction grants the character one rare magical item associated with its history, principles, or area of expertise. The exact item is agreed upon with the GM. |
| 50 | Operation. The faction commits substantial personnel, resources, specialists, and long-term support to a major objective affecting an entire region. The characters must still confront the central threat and make any important decisions connected to the operation. Use this to create a mission on the questboard with your own objectives! |
